Brigham and Women’s Hospital Opens Innovative Operating Room

by Todd Leddy on January 6th, 2012

BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S HOSPITAL

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has begun providing care to patients in the Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating (AMIGO) suite. AMIGO is the first operating room in the world to combine all forms of advanced imaging modalities in one suite including MRI, PET/CT, ultrasound, x-ray fluoroscopy and angiography. AMIGO will enable clinicians to research, develop and refine surgical and interventional techniques that are less invasive, tailored to individual patients’ needs and result in better outcomes for patients, all through the addition of intraoperative image guidance. Clinicians have performed brain, prostate and other soft tissue biopsies; prostate and cervical cancer brachytherapies; percutaneous tumor ablations; and craniotomies for brain lesion resections. The next phase of AMIGO procedures will add breast conserving therapy and cardiac procedures. Patients who are cared for in AMIGO are typically enrolled in research studies that include collection of data related to imaging use, surgical protocol and patient outcomes.
