Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center Marks its 500th Procedure Using the da Vinci® Si™ Robotic Surgical System

BROWARD HEALTH

In 2009, Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center (BHCSMC) became the first hospital in Broward County to acquire the da Vinci® Si™ Robotic Surgical System with robotic surgery capabilities for patients needing a prostatectomy or a hysterectomy. Since then, the BHCSMC robotic surgical program has grown and currently has 20 da Vinci® trained surgeons. This month marks the 500th procedure using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System. The 500th procedure – a prostectomy – was performed at BHCSMC by urologist Dr. Michael Zahalsky. Patients who have received a da Vinci® prostatectomy have significantly lower rates of serious complications (3.7 percent for robotic vs. 12.9 percent for open) and are able to return to work significantly earlier than open prostatectomy patients (11 days for robotic vs. 49 days for open).
